The Faithful Black Men at UCLA. Who are they ? What are they ? What is their purpose ? These are just some of the many questions that come up when FBM is discussed. Well, for those who may not know, this growing group of men are indeed an official club on UCLA’s campus with one mission: to unite and build the Black community on campus. After being educated on the very real and detrimental effects that stressors have on Black men attending Predominantly White Institutions – both the physically and mentally – the founders of FBM realized the need to develop a closer community. Creating a fun and productive space for those affected could do a lot to minimize these stressors. FBM works to create a space in which healthy and productive levels of comfort and vulnerability can be fostered amongst Black men. Comfort was needed in order to create the trust necessary to enable our members to be vulnerable with each other. Vulnerability was needed in order to effectively discuss issues the Black community faces – which include, but are not limited to: mental health, homophobia, hypermasculinity, and intersectionality. Although FBM is a club on UCLA’s campus that’s is tailored to Black men, it is not exclusive to Black men. Creating the space for and uniting the men was a small step, and we have realized the need to bridge the gap between the men, women, and athletes of the entire Black community. In taking the steps to do so, FBM has taken the approach of community outreach through hosting Sunday Study Sessions, parties, and miscellaneous events  – all in the hopes that the community realizes that we can all work hard, discuss issues, and have fun together. As FBM has worked to bring the men on campus closer together, we have attained a level of visibility that has caused the organization to become a talking point amongst everyone. In writing this piece – and with our future ventures – I hope all are able to see that. Through redefining what it means to be men and leaders within our community and our respective lives, FBM is trying to better themselves in order to better their community.
