Eulogy to Pride

Pride, Pride, Pride

It’s very important that I say your name

I reek of your stench

Your essence slowly seeps out of me

My relationship with you is a slippery slope

But today is the day I tell you how I feel

Today is the day I look at you for who you truly are

Today, I depart from you

Pride

You are the demon in my life

You are what separates me from God

You have held me in your embrace for far too long

You are my oldest friend

We met, We became friends when I was eight

You were the only thing that kept me away from self-hate

When kids words cut skin deep

You are the reason I didn’t drown

So from there, I walked with you, I grew with you, I even loved you

But that’s when I began to cut others

When I began to push them below the surface

You see, I thought you were someone else

I thought you were confidence

I thought you made me better

But I was wrong

You are full of deceit

This is an imitation game you put on repeat

It isn’t fooling me anymore

Rather than building others up, you cut them down

The worst part of our relationship is the silent suffering

Your embrace turns into a choke hold

It’s like a prison cell and I’m watching through cell bars

My mouth is covered shut

You keep me from apologizing

You prevent me from admitting I’m wrong

You stop me from confessing that I need help

You encourage me to boast

You influence me to cover up my lies

I am tired of loading the clip with self validation

I am tired of shooting to kill my own relationships

I am tired of processing the crime scene as if I wasn’t the shooter

Pride, You have ruined enough

You are not welcome here

Gone are the times I turned to you

I am not that eight year old boy anymore

I don’t want anything thing to do with the demon

I want to rid myself of this sin

It is past time I reconcile with God

Today is the day I tell you how I feel

Today is the day I look at you for who you truly are

Today, I depart from you

And today is the day that I associate with others

Humility, Humility, Humility

It’s very important that I learn your name

I’ve longed for your presence, for your company

This friendship with you is new, but your traits… your traits are true

My mouth is finally liberated

You implore me to apologize

You even admit when you’re wrong

You have the courage to confess that you need help

You celebrate the accomplishments of others, rather than boast your own

You put others before yourself

You even recognize and acknowledge your limitations

So from now on,

I will walk with humility, I will grow with her

So to Humility I say

Today is the day I sever my ties with Pride

Today is the day I start to see you in me

Today, I will walk, I will grow, and I will love you

Thank You
